Anti venom serum
Anti venom serum is used to counteract the poison from snake bites. It is also used in insect bites. It is the only effective treatment for bite of poisonous snake.
Anti venom serum is a biological product. The product is created by injecting a small amount of the targeted venom into an animal like sheep, horse, rabbit or goat. Then that particular animal will have an immune response to the venom. Consequently antibodies against the venom's active molecule will be produced. Then the antibodies can be collected from that animal's blood.
This collected antibody is used in the treatment of others.
There are two types of antivenoms.
- monovalent (when it is effective against a particular species' venom)
- polyvalent (when It is effective against a range of species, or different types of species).
