BCG Vaccine
BCG stands for Bacillus Calmette Gueri. BCG is used for the prevention of tuberculosis. It's a live freeze-dried vaccine derived from attenuated strain of mycobacterium bovis.
BCG should strictly be injected via the intradermal route. The subcutaneous route should be avoided. After vaccination, generally no pain or fever is felt. BCG is always given on the left shoulder of a person. BCG vaccine is contraindicated in a disorder or disease in which natural immune response is altered. Therefore, strict supervision of an experienced physician is essential.
Two to Three weeks after the BCG vaccination, a papule develops at the site of vaccination. Its size increases upto 4-8 mm (diameter) in five weeks. Then it breaks into a shallow ulcer covered with a crust. But it heals spontaneously in six-twelve weeks.
The BCG vaccination leaves a permanent round scar of Two-Ten mm in diameter
