Hepatitis A Vaccine
Hepatitis A Vaccine is available under the brand names of Havrix, Avaxim etc. It works against the attack of Hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A Vaccine contains inactivated Hepatitis A virus that gives immunity against infection in future. No part of the vaccine is live. The vaccine is effective in approximate 95% cases. It gives protection for at least 10 years. Hepatitis A Vaccine is recommended for all children in the age of 12 to 23 months.
The first hepatitis A vaccine was available in 1995. It is administered by an injection into the muscle of the upper arm for older children & adults and in the thigh muscle of toddlers.
Technical detail:
HEPATITIS A MCCWET it is a sterile suspension containing formaldehyde-inactivated hepatitis A virus (HM 175 hepatitis A virus strain} adsorbed onto ' aluminium hydroxide. The virus is propagated in MRC human diploid cells. An adult dose is standardised to ensure a viral antigen content of not less than 720 ELISA units of viral antigens, in a 1 ml dose volume. A paediatric dose is standardized to ensure a viral antigen content of not less than 360 ELISA units of viral antigens in a 0.5 ml dose volume.
Indications: Active immunization against hepatitis A virus infection.
Dosage: Adult 1 ml/not less than 720 ELISA units. Pediatrics: 0.5 ml/not less than 360 ELISA units. Immunization schedule: First dose at elected date and second one month later. If necessary, second dose may be administered a minimum of two weeks mended at any time between 6 & 12 months after initiation of primary course. Vaccine should be used intramuscularly; and in deltoid regions in adult and children.
Contraindications: Acute severe febrile illness.
Special Precautions: Administer with caution to subjects with thrornbocytopenia or a bleeding disorder should not be administered intravenously.
Side-effects: Mild headache, malaise, fatigue, fever, nausea and loss of appetite.
