Zinc
Zinc is an essential trace element. It is a component part of many enzymes, like superoxide dismutase, carbonic anhydrase, lactate dehydrogenase.
Physiological role : Essential for proper DNA synthesis Zinc dependent enzymes are involved in metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Zinc also helps in wound healing and in development of cell mediated immunity.
Deficiency symptoms : Anorexia, growth retardation, dermatitis, alopecia, depressed T cell function, impaired taste and olfactory sensation, hypogonadism, impaired healing, hepatosplenomegaly, stoma¬titis glossitis.
INDICATIONS : Acne vulgaris, chronic skin ul¬cers, alopecia, delayed wound healing, other zinc deficiency states.
SAFETY PROFILE : Avoid over doses.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Zinc decreases GI ab¬sorption of fluoroquinolones & iron. Penicilla-mine reduces the absorption of zinc.
